Volunteer Spotlight:  Steve Neff

Picture
If you’ve ever visited the Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper homepage, you’ve been greeted by the passion of Steve Neff, a local photographer and LPOW volunteer.  His stunning, hand-developed portraits of light, wildlife, and water create the slide show that showcases the beauty of Lake Pend Oreille for everyone who visits our site.

Steve has been a Sandpoint resident for six years now.  In those years he has developed an extraordinary intimacy with Lake Pend Oreille and its waters, especially the Sand Creek area, which he calls his “office”.  An avid kayaker, Steve spends most days from March through November on the water; training for races and paddling the hidden wilds.  Paddling is his therapy and his way to keep in touch with the changes that come to the lake from year to year and season to season.  His boat- bound excursions give him a unique perspective on the ecosystems he paddles through, and an opportunity to capture this perspective on film.  When I asked him about his photography and Pend Oreille, he answered “It is a wonderful subject.  I wouldn’t be here if the lake wasn’t here”.

Steve began volunteering with LPOW because it just made sense.  “I’m out here all the time on my own” he says, “This is a good thing that I can do to help out”.  His combination of on-the-water skills, local experience, and photographic expertise has made Steve a great volunteer.  In addition to providing us with beautiful imagery of Lake Pend Oreille and its wildlife, Steve also joined our 2012 Water Quality Monitoring crew and collected water samples from his kayak.  He remembers his first Secchi disk reading being “a bit sketchy”, but with the addition of a simple outrigger, he was able to sample successfully.  He now plans to be part of the 2013 Water Quality Monitoring project as well.  We’re thankful to have his help, and we’re excited to see the new photos that come from his paddles into fall!
