Giving Tuesday & End of the Year Fundraiser!
November 30, 2021 @ 12:00 am - December 31, 2021 @ 11:59 pm PST
Every year, people from all over the world come together to celebrate Giving Tuesday – a global generosity movement that promotes community engagement and giving back. Last year approximately 34.8 million people worldwide participated in Giving Tuesday, and $2.47 billion was raised in the US alone! This year, Giving Tuesday takes place on November 30th.
LPOW is hoping to raise $5,000 between Giving Tuesday and the end of the year! These funds will be used to help support our stormwater monitoring program and our clean up events. Stormwater is the melting snow and rain that runs through our towns and over our yards into nearby stormdrains or directly into a nearby waterbody. Currently, our stormwater drains unfiltered into Sand Creek, Lake Pend Oreille, and the Pend Oreille River. Through previous monitoring efforts, we’ve found 2,4-D, diesel fuel, high levels of nutrients, and carcinogens in our stormwater. By monitoring what’s draining into our precious waterways, we are able to provide data to local and state agencies in order to urge them to take action and install filtration systems.
Stormwater monitoring is incredibly complicated and requires loads of staff time to monitor incoming weather, collect data, and create reports from our lab results. This isn’t cheap, either. Lab analysis for a single stormwater sample costs about $200 and there are over 30 stormwater outfalls just around Sandpoint, Kootenai, and Ponderay. With your support, we will be able to expand our monitoring efforts and collect more samples from around our watershed.
Plus, we are hoping to host more shoreline clean up events this next year! Thanks to the success and interest in our 2021 clean ups, we want to buy more sustainable cleanup supplies and host clean up events at locations outside of Sandpoint. These events require staff time to plan and advertise the events around town. Your donations will help LPOW staff reach a larger community and pick up trash along popular shoreline areas around Lake Pend Oreille.
Finally, your donations will support our environmental education programs. This year we finally released our Lake Ecology Educational Program! This program includes a 6-part video series and a workbook for teachers with background information, vocabulary, online resources, a worksheet, and a class activity for each of the 6 topics. We hope to raise the funds necessary to print high-quality workbooks and provide them to local schools. The videos are currently available for anyone to view HERE!
